Beneath the Southern Sky is a travelling exhibition of contemporary textile works to be displayed at the Australasian Quilt Convention, Craft Expo Auckland and other venues in 2012. May 2011 Meeting

What a wonderful day we had at our May meeting.

Alison ran a mini hands on workshop called 'Scrapescrape" and there was lots of enthusiasm from those who took part.
Paint spread onto tissue paper them spread out using an old credit card or similar.
Then glue was spread out onto baking paper to form shapes to be used later for stencilling on top of the painted tissue paper.

The second part of the meeting was a talk from Ankie King who brought along her 2007 Exhibition, 'Lady Dyes the Blues" for us to see. Everyone was in awe of the work load Ankie put on herself to make the pieces for the exhibition, it was explained by Ankie that once one piece was made it followed with another idea and came together beautifully. It was wonderful to see the pieces up close and have a good look at the hand stitching and different techniques she had used.

Watch you local papers for stories on some of the SotAq11 contributors advertising the Textile Art Festival which is on in Brisbane at the Convention Centre, June 11th, 12th and 13th. That's the June long weekend ' hope to see you there.

April 2011 Meeting

Here are some images from our Meeting and what a great day we had. Show and tell was wonderful as always lots to see and admire.

I took pics of bags I saw on the table, quite a variety,

Show and tell was from Lois who made the Green bag from an article in Quilting Arts magazine and Mereana with her Grey bag made with fleece and wadding. Made because she needed a bag to attend an exhibition opening and managed to whip it up in 20mins, wow.

Both Lois and Mereana are member of the smARTARTs group of textile artists who have an exhibition on at the Cleveland Museum until the 29th of May, very worthy of a visit or 2.

A lot of enthusiasm as Felicity Clark shared her samples from a recent workshop she attended. Great colours and texture in these pieces and everyone crowded around to here her tell how and what was done.

Carmel shared her work, I wore the lovely bright scarf and Mereana shared her bead broach and promised to give a demo on making beads later in the year.

Lots of time to chat and have a close look at show and tell items.
Alison and Suzanne had a chat, and showed their work, Suzanne made a carpet piece for a challenge with ATASDA, Alison guided people with help from Jan McPike in making (or starting to make) quilts4London, small pendants that will be given to athletes attending the 2012 Olympic games and Para Olympic game.

The day went to quickly but was enjoyed by all who attended.

A wonderful day with lots of activity. A lovely new hall for our meeting with plenty of room to move around.

Live Art Day was a hit with lots of laughter. The theme of Blue and White and Wearable/Drapeable proved popular and working in groups of 6 there were some amazing outfits produce. Top picture is the table of Blues and Whites that everyone worked from.
Alison George and Desley Drevins showed some quilts they had made, some to be given to the Queensland Quilters to pass out to people affected by the January floods.

Vessels Challenge reveal Nov 2010

Earlier in the year we launched a Vessels Challenge to be revealed at our ARTrageous Christmas breakup. Everyone enthusiastically took up the challenge and produced some remarkable Vessels.

Congratulations to all, they made for a great show and we all learnt something listening to the artist talk about how they had produced their entry.

What a great meeting we had this month. A lot of people away already on holiday who were missed and who missed some great show and tell.

Melanie Forrest's stitching on white paper and then on painted paper, she has plans to do a lot more of this.
.Jane Rundle showed her finished artwork that was made with online friends, 15 people each made a quilt top to a pattern. They were then sent to one person who cut all tops into 15 pieces and sent each person 1 piece from each top made. I hope that was clear.

Demonstration day was a great success, Sue Dennis, Melanie Forest, Jan McPike, Felicity Clark and Susan Pietsch of Essential Textile Art Supplies all had great textile art products for us to see put to use and to try for ourselves.
Member sales day gave all the chance to buy some items that we just had to have.

Now is the time to get working on your "Off the Page" challenge which is due at the September meeting. The challenges will be collected on meeting day so the can be displayed at the Qld Quilters Quilt Show in October.

Our April meeting was very busy with some amazing show and tell, product dicovery, and the launch of the 'Off the Page' challenge.

Autumn Journals

Door Hangers drew a lot of excitment during show and tell. A collaborative effort of a group of fabric artists.

The March meeting was very busy with lots of show and tell. A big thank you to those who showed their work and took part in the Autumn Journals.

We also had a great talk from Claire Maclaine on Design, here are some of the points of design for you to research. 1. Balance, 2. Untiy, 3. Focal Point, 4. Line, 5. Shape, 6. Scale, 7. Colour, 8. Pattern, 9. Texture. Claire covered several of these points in her talk and will be covering more in future meetings.

After Claire's talk we watched the SAQA slide show and all present really appreciated the works that were presented.

Sold Quilt Delivered

At the Textile Art Festival in May this year, "Solar Flare", a beautiful quilt created by Lisa Walton as an entry in the inaugural State of the Art quilt 09 exhibition, was purchased by Gaby. Gaby runs a healing practice called Liquid Movement on the Sunshine Coast, and she knew the quilt would be perfect for herself and clients to look at before and during treatment.

The quilt has only just finished its tour (last seen at the Boonah Art Gallery on Sunday 4 October), so Gaby has been patiently waiting for it all these months. It was hand delivered and is now "home". "

Queensland Quilt Show 09

The team have done well making postcards at the show. Met lots of would be art quilters and encouraging them to join Queensland Quilters and come along and join in at our meetings. Lots of postcards have been made and are making the shape of a Christmas tree on the wall behind where we were sitting.

Thank you to Unique Stitching, Tulis Fabrics and the Scissor Man who supplied us with fun things to work with during the show.

2Q members & guests were treated to a wonderfully inspirational ARTicualtion Afternoon with speakers, Helen Forrest, Yvonne Ritson & Brabara Cowan.
The topic was texture & the 3 speakers presented 3 varied viewpoints on this which was fascinating.

Helen uses many techniques in her pieces to create texture & common household items can end up in her work. Being able to handle Helen's samples & look closely has inspired us all. One of Helen's quilts will be displayed in a Japanese exhibition later this year.

Barbara's expertise with her longarm sewing machine & the resulting texture added to the overall impact of each quilt. Her beautiful quilts showed us the importance of evaluating the design to be used for the quilting.

These are some of the tips Barbara shared with us.

Look at the quilt top for quilting ideas:
Does it have a traditional feel? Use cross hatching, formal feathers, formal medallions, Baptist fans.

Quilt-in-a-day:
What is it going to be used for? A utility quilt or gift?

Is the quilt funky?
If the quilt has stripes & bright colours use funky quilting.

Large plain areas?
Use the the texturising effect of quilting. Also good around applique.

No one design will suit all quilts.

Boonah Gallery Opening

A lovely evening at Boonah for the opening night of the 2QAQ SotA09 exhibition.
The gallery is lovely with great lighting that shows off the work to advantage.
The Boonah local paper journalist was on hand to take photos and had already put a story in a previous issue letting people know the Art Quilts were going to be on display.

The SotA09 quilts have been hung at the Boonah Regional Art Gallery in High St and will be on show from Aug 21 to October 4. The gallery is open from Wed- Sun 10am-4pm.. Hope you get along to see them.
Its a lovely venue and I'm sure the guilts will do it proud.

A very excited Lisa Walton after her entry in the SotAq09 sold while hanging at the Textile Art Festival in Brisbane last week.

Fortunately SotAq09 was hanging opposite Lisa's stand at the Festival so she was on hand to have her photo taken and to meet the quilt purchaser.

We are all very happy for Lisa.

Original 2QAQ committee member Kate Oszko, outgoing President of Qld Quilters is farewelled. We will miss Kate's considerable input & steadying hand at our meetings. It was originally Kate's idea to have an art quilt show for 2Q members & her vision has been realised with the STATE of the ART quilt exhibition for 2Q members.

"Whilst many of us were doing classes at the Textile Art Festival, or visiting the 2Q challenge exhibition, 13 ladies decided that the 2QAQ meeting was a must. Lively discussion ensued about different textile techniques, as well as individual reviews of the exhibitions being held that weekend.

It was meant to be a UFO and swap day, but it became very exciting when Lynne Smith spread 2 garbage bags of ex dressmaking fabric on the tables and gave permission for us to take what we wanted.(one of the photos shows some of the ladies sorting through the piles) Tracy was able to retrieve a bundle of good quality satins for the Beenleigh quilt group who make under arm cushions/pads for ladies recovering from breast cancer.

Other ladies brought goods to swap as well, and I know of one very successful transaction which involved fabric and an artfully knitted scarf.

I'm not sure how much UFOing got done, but we readily admired art pieces brought for 'Show off and tell'! see photo.

Mereana really enjoyed the Inchie make it meeting and had already completed the next part of the Inchie Challenge. (see photo)

By the end of the afternoon, our heads were hurting from new ideas and our fingers ached to get on with it.

Queensland Quilter Challenge

Friday night was the opening of the Queensland Quilters Challenge and everyone had a lovely time.

1st Place SILVER ANNIVERSARY by Robyn Flynn

25 zippers, 25 years.

The seed stitches represent the beginning.

The stems and leaves - growth and development.

The flowers - goals reached and beauty expressed.

The ticker tape – celebration.

2nd Place THREADS OF TIME by Helen Kidd

One step at a time 25 stepping stones – 25 years for QQ to get to where we are now.

The threads of quilting are common and bind us together.
This is an original design using quilters cotton lame and a variety of threads for the surface design.

3rd Place THE FACTS OF THE MATTER by Trish Cartner

This quilt was made to commemorate the Material Facts magazine of the Queensland Quilters on the 25th anniversary. It was made by scanning back issues of Material Facts. These images were arranged and printed onto fabric that forms the body of the quilt. Further images were appliqued on the quilt, and 25 banner titles of the magazine in all different styles were appliqued around the border. Quilts featured made by Lyn Hales, Sue Duffy, Pam Hill, Lorraine Carthew and Cinzia White.

Highly Commended HERE’S 2 U 2Q! by Jeannie Henry

I have chosen the image of a well known 2Q member celebrating the 25th anniversary as my inspiration for this challenge. I took many photographs and then transferred my design to fabric using machine applique, machine embroidery and machine quilting. I also included hand stitching and embellishment with beads, a button and a pearl earring. I incorporated the words twenty five by using them as my background quilting motif.

Textile Art Festival

What a weekend we had in Brisbane with the Textile Art Festival. There were so many art quilts in one building it was hard to know what direction to go in.

The State of the Art quilts09 were on display and many many people were impressed by the quality of our work and enjoyed getting to see the pieces up close and personal.

Tactile Quilters

Our volunteers also cared for a wonderful selection of art quilts from Canberra based group 'Tactile' called Collections. What a great display from Jenny Bowker, Dianne Firth, Beth & Trevor Reid, Helen Gray and Beth Miller. A lot of positive remarks from viewers who were thrilled to see these quilts up close. 'My Place'

Dijanne Cevaal was teaching and demonstrating and curating the My Place quilts that are touring, having been to Sth Africa and New Zealand and now Brisbane and about to have a story in one of the magazines. 30 quilts each from Sth Africa, New Zealand and Australia were hung in a wonderful open space which gave viewers a great opportunity to see a wonderful display and most were commenting on the use of so many different techniques.

Sue and Mel followed the SotAq09 quilts to Townsville and sent us back some photos.

Fibres & Fabrics Association have made inchies & swapped them. These are some of the things they have made with their inchies.

A4 size pieces in a particularcolour were made & swapped at the end. That's why the resulting pices made from the inchies all look rainbow coloured.

Exhibition Opening

SEEN AT THE SotAq09 OPENING
Many exhibitors were able to join us for the opening of the STATE of the ART quilt 09 exhibition on Friday 27 March on the Gold Coast. Alison Muir, one of our jurors flew up from Sydney to open the show. It was interesting to hear her comments on how she went about the selection process & it gave everyone heart to hear she had received many rejection letters during her career.

Queensland Quilters president Kate Oszko and committee member Mel Forrest hanging the exhibition works on the Goldcoast yesterday.

Advertising for the SotAq09 exhibition meant someone (there were a few of us) had to do the hard yards and have their photo taken for articles in local newspapers. You get a sneak preview of the piece I am currently working on in this photo.

The photographer arrived and at the door asked if I had any quilts I could be photographed in front of, I just smiled and let him inside - it would be hard to take a photo without a quilt being in it, there's work everywhere, finished and in process.

Today is opening day.

Rainforests are precious habitats threatened by climate change. I created an imaginary home for the King Parrot family which visits our garden regularly, somehow surviving a very marginal habitat.

My sister Annette commissioned this artwork to represent the northern tropics where she now resides, her particular delight being the Ulysses Butterfly.

This is a journey through memories, joined by bloodlines & dates- birth, death & duration. An ongoing story I’m growing to accept as I head towards the age my mother passed away.
Cotton fabric, hand dyed cotton batting, wool & silk roving, handmade felt, DMC thread, stuffing for the high relief effect, handkerchief linen with images transferred to them. Hand quilting, felting, photo transfer, hand painting of my poems text. My mother’s image was needle felted, highlighted with seed stitch for depth & subtle shading & padded to give a 3d/high relief look.

We are very excited to announce our inaugural exhition, SotAq09 will be shown during Craftfest, Goldcoast, 27th - 29th March 2009, in the Exhibition Centre, Broadbeach, Qld .

Textile artist Alison Muir of Sydney, one of the jurors will open the exhibition on Friday the 27th at 11am.

Entry forms for SotAq10 will be available soon from Queensland Quilters website http://www.qldquilters.com/, entry is open to members of Queensland Quilters.

Live Art Table Centres

Bring along - a red heart, something black and something white.

Everything was placed on a table and groups selected items to use in their live art piece.
When each piece was finished we discussed what we liked, what we didn't, focal point and more.
This was a fun day and enjoyed by everyone.

We began in 2008 and had a very full year which saw the launch of our first Art Exhibition, 'State of the Art quilt 09', a juried exhibition which has its opening Fri 27th March at Craftfest on the Goldcoast
